Having even one Black doctor within a county resulted in a higher life expectancy among Black patients, according toa study publishedon JAMA Network Open. The authors of the longitudinal cohort study wanted to determine whether there is an association between the number of Black county-level primary care physicians and the number of mortality-related outcomes. And they did, in fact, find there was an association. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Association of American Medical Colleges looked at over 3,700 counties across the U.S. in 2009, 2014 and 2019. Then, they narrowed those numbers down to a combined sample of 1,618 U.S. counties, based on whether at least one Black primary care physician operated within a county during one or more of those three years. The study did not consider counties where there were no Black physicians. The data showed that counties with more Black physicians resulted in higher life expectancy for Black patients, while Black mortality rates and mortality rate disparities between Black and White patients increased with fewer Black physi stanley cup website cians within a coun stanley cup becher ty. State and local health officials expressed concerns Tuesday after seeing a steady and steep decline in the number of people getting tested for the coronavirus.Wisconsin health leaders say the state is equipped to test far more people than the amount that have been showing up to learn their status at sites like the drive-thru location outside Miller Park.Over the past two weeks, state health department data shows about 10,000 fewer Wisconsinites are getting tested each day compared to the weeks prior. Milwaukee County and state health officials said theyre puzzled as to why. Were all sort of scratching our heads about it considering the high level of new daily cases that we continue to see, said Wisconsin Department of Health Services Secretary Designee Andrea Palm. Often that motivates people to get tested. Palm said she expected to see a drop-off in testing during the week of Thanksgiving but the trend has continued since. On average over the past two weeks, fewer than 30,000 Wisconsinites have been tested each day com stanley thermos pared to more than 41,000 per day during the previous two weeks. Meanwhile, Wisconsins 7-day positivity rate per person came in at 30.5 percent on Tuesday. If we don t test enough people, we will not find the cases that are out there. And this is shown in that increase that we re see copo stanley ing in the percent positivity, said Milwaukee Cou stanley water jug nty s emergency medical director Dr. Ben Weston. The same trend can be found in Milwaukee Countys testing numbers. President Biden s com stanley vaso ments were delivered as police tried to forcefully remove protesters from UCLA s campus early Thursday. The demonstrations were among dozens being held across the U.S., which caused some campuses to close classrooms and cancel commencement ceremonies. Peaceful protests are in the best tradition of stanley cup how Americans respond to consequential issues, President Biden said. But, neither are we a lawless country. We re a civil society and order must prevail. The president said the protests have not caused him to rethink his policies regarding the Middle East. The U.S. has continued to provide military assistance for the Israel Defense Forces in its retaliation for last October s terrorist attack conducted by Hamas. The result of Israel s offensive has caused a massive humanitarian crisis in Gaza, displacing many Palestinians and making access to food and health care challenging. While some protests at college campuses have been peaceful, there have been reports of trespassing and antisemitic comments at some demonstrations. People have the right to get an education, right to get a degree, right to walk across the campus safely without fear of being attacked, President Biden said. Wisconsin scientist Madeline Magee tells the AP that while the mild Midwestern winters of the last few years may be a delight for most folks, climate researchers like her are concerned that the lack of ice cover on the Great Lakes may have consequences. The goal of the study is to really understand what is happening in the winter on the Great Lakes, said Magee. If we lose ice cover, we really are changing the fundamental ecosystem of the Great Lakes in ways that we don t really understand right now. Over the last 50 years, mid-February would see Great Lakes ice cover at abo stanley thermos mug ut 40% on average, and as much as 91%. This year on Feb. 11, ice coverage was measured by federal researchers at 2.7%, a historic low. The winter period is really important because it helps set the stanley cup stage for spring and summer conditions on the Great Lakes, Magee said.Scientists suspect that lack of ice makes the water warm up more quickly, resulting in less oxygen reaching the lower parts of the Lakes. That causes plankton and other organisms to die, reducing a food source for fish. Warmer lakes could also fuel algae blooms that spoil beaches and clog shipping channels. Less ice could also mean shrinking beaches. The most I would say immediate and kind of observable effect of lack of ice cover is actually going to be shoreline erosion, she said.In aproject ledby Michigan Tech, scientists have been collecting winter-specific data stanley uk to compare to summer conditions.
